Your Choice
Choosing an accountant is a very important decision to make. You need to choose one that matches your needs and one who you feel comfortable with, implicitly trust and whose fees are fair.
· Understanding |
Get an accountant you can speak to openly and honestly, who understands what you are saying, and who you understand. |
· Commercial awareness |
Do they understand your business, your issues and are they genuinely commercially aware? |
· Call whenever you need |
Get an accountant who you can call whenever you need help and advice. |
· Gives tax saving ideas |
You want an accountant who will pro-actively come up with regular new ideas. Do you have to ask for advice or is it forthcoming? |
· Quick response |
Make an enquiry and see how quickly they respond. If they cannot respond quickly when they are trying to attract your business, what will they be like when they act for you? |
· Other services offered |
Find out if they offer all the services you need and consider what you will need in the future as you grow. |
· Existing clients |
Ask whether existing clients would refer them and speak to those clients. |
· Use of email |
Email doesn’t suit everyone but ask if they use it, it speeds up service and saves costs. If they are not up to date with IT, then you are likely to pay more. |
· Will they visit you? |
Ask them if they will visit you for an initial consultation free of charge. Do they care about you becoming a client or staying as one for that matter? |
· Fixed fees |
Do they offer a fixed fee service wherever possible for your work? If not, get a fee they won't go beyond without your agreement. Don't worry about hourly rates, it's the value of what you get that matters and the more experienced accountants with higher hourly rates can do the work a lot more quickly and efficiently anyway. |
· Who Will You Deal With? |
Find out who you will be dealing with in the firm or will you be passed around lots of different people. |
· Listen or Talk and Take Action? |
Do they listen to you or mostly talk at you? You want an accountant who takes a real interest in you and your business and takes action on what you need. If not, change, and change now! |
